MANILA, Philippines – Suspected communist rebels killed 5 Army troopers in an ambush in Mt. Province, Wednesday morning.

Col. Remegio de Vera, commander of the Philippine Army’s 501st Infantry Brigade, said troops from the 54th IB were dispatched to check a report about the presence of heavily armed members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barangay Mainit, Sagada town.

De Vera said that upon reaching the tri-boundary of Sagada, Isaw and Bontoc towns, at least 20 rebels under the Kilusan Larangan Guerilla Marco ambushed the soldiers.

He said 5 Army privates identified only through their surnames Abad, Casem, Corpus, Mayao and Ramirez, were killed. Four more soldiers were hurt in the ambush.

De Vera said military choppers and several Army teams have been dispatched to the area to pursue the rebels.

Unconfirmed reports say that 2 rebels were killed and 8 were wounded.
